STATEMENT: GPH Applauds House on Key NDAA Amendments

WASHINGTON — Global Progressive Hub released the following statement regarding passage of the House version of the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act:

We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for rejecting a handful of amendments to the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act that would have reversed progress on a number of issues that we believe protect the rights and security of Americans and citizens around the world.

A bipartisan majority rejected measures designed to absolve the Pentagon of its responsibility to complete a study on the effects that climate change will have on military installations, and another on the cost effectiveness of alternative fuels for the military. The House also rejected an amendment that would have prohibited the Defense Department from entering into new biofuels contracts while the Budget Control Act remains law.

Further, the House rejected an anti-Muslim amendment that critics said would have “abridged the free exercise” of an entire religion, and it defeated a measure that would have blocked the Pentagon from funding gender reassignment surgeries for service members.

The House also passed amendments that would limit the U.S. military’s involvement in Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen — where millions are on the brink of war fueled famine — to the pursuit of terrorist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda.

While we recognize that the House defeated many progressive priorities in the FY2018 NDAA — like moving to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and placing modest limits on the Pentagon budget — the rejection of these regressive measures, and the inclusion of the amendments on Yemen, is a positive step forward for our country and the world.
